Ground driving or long lining, the essential training method for carriage horses, has recently become popular with riders. A step-up from lungeing, ground driving improves your horse's obedience and balance and is a great way to train or exercise your horse out of the saddle; as well as a great training tool in the development of the green or young riding and/or driving horse. It is also very helpful in older, show and pleasure horses to achieve more suppleness through the body and acceptance of the bit. Variety in your training program is one of the keys to keeping a happy, healthy and sound horse. This clinic will give you one more training tool to add to your program.
We will be discussing different types and applications of lungeing, equipment, trouble shooting techniques, as well as a variety of side rein settings, with an emphasis on safety and enjoyment for both you and your horse. Here are some of the fundamentals you will learn:
- Suppleness through the body
- Safety procedures
- Obedience
- Acceptance of the bit
- Learning a steady, elastic contact
- Teaching voice commands in relation to rein pressure
- Standing and patience (you and the horse)
- Lateral movements
COST: $35 (includes lunch)
Jeff Rusk’s interest in horses began at a young age, taking him from standardbred racetracks to his own Wedding Horse Carriage business in Madison. A lifelong student and trainer of horses, he has worked with Mary Ruth Marks, Vernon Gross and Delbert Bosley, to name a few. A strong proponent of natural training methods emphasizing a soft, light touch with light contact, he incorporates the philosophies of Sarah Blanchard and Steve Bowers. An enthusiastic and gifted teacher, Rusk makes learning fun and interesting.
Setting a solid foundation of basic skills for all students is a priority at GLAD Farms. From this foundation a horseperson gains confidence, proficiency, and achievement of excellence.
